Pizza Sauce with Roasted Onions

Thick, Chunky Homemade Pizza Sauce

We’ve tried a lot of pizza sauce recipes: cooked and uncooked, using canned chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, even fresh tomatoes. This amazing pizza sauce is thick and chunky, adding both flavor and texture to every pizza. This recipe was adapted from the Sue and John’s Best Ever Pizza Sauce recipe on the astray recipes website.

Ingredients

2 medium onions, roasted, chopped
1/4 tsp garlic powder
28 oz can whole tomatoes, chopped
6 oz tomato paste
1 1/2 Tbl dried parsley
3/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp oregano
1 Tbl brown sugar
1/2 tsp dried basil
3/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
3/4 tsp baking soda

Method

Roast Onions
Peel onions and slice in halves. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Place cut-side down on lipped cookie sheet. Roast 25 minutes at 425° F until cut surfaces are golden brown. Chop.
Cook the sauce
Combine all ingredients in large saucepan.
Simmer 30 min.

Makes 4 cups.
Approximately 300 calories per half cup.
