Classic Diner Fare Prepared with Fresh, Local Ingredients
If you appreciate simple American diner fare made with high-quality, local ingredients, then put the Phoenicia Diner on your To Do list. It is a dream.
The Phoenicia Diner is exceptional in many ways.
- The view. Every window, every direction, looks out on the spectacular Catskill Mountains.
- The menu. Rather than the massive, multi-page menus that NY diners are known for, the menu here is a single page. In fact, it’s the placemat.
- The building. This restored 1960s diner combines the nostalgic feel of an old-time diner with perfectly modern updates. The light-colored wood ceiling is fresh and bright and blends beautifully with white walls. Natural light flows in from walls of south- and east-facing windows. There are large and small booths and plenty of counter seating.
At first glance, the menu options look rather typical: full breakfast, bagel and lox, hamburgers, tuna-fish. But look again. The salmon and trout are locally smoked, the beef grass-fed, the tuna pole-caught. And if you like French fries, you’re in for a treat. They’re hand-cut, crispy outside and fluffy inside. Mouth watering yet?
There’s more. Even the milkshakes are amazing (made with Ronnybrook ice cream, of course). The juices, orange and grapefruit, are freshly squeezed. Finally, diner coffee is notoriously awful. Not here. The coffee is rich and full of flavor.
The Phoenicia Diner is about a mile outside the village of Phoenicia. It’s a popular place, so be prepared to wait. But it’s worth it. The staff is attentive and professional, not overly-friendly, but quick and efficient.
